Derek Knowles has twenty-eight years of experience in luxury hospitality design. He has guided the technical development and construction of numerous world-class resorts, playing a critical role in shaping their designs. Most recently, while at Hart Howerton, he led the exterior design effort on two signature projects: the Montage Big Sky and Phase II of the Yellowstone Club.

In 2024, Derek stepped away from corporate practice of architecture to explore more personal approaches to design. His work is guided towards four main ends:

• reintroduce richness and complexity of pattern to architecture

 • use computer technology to invent new possibilities for form while still adhering to timeless principles of good design

 • keep design grounded in common sense and driven by imagination

• make buildings that not only work (functionally, ecologically, structurally, etc), but also have a soul.
